How to Build a Referral Program for Your Auto Repair Shop

A referral program turns satisfied customers into salespeople. Learn how to design one that works and encourages customers to send friends and family to your shop.

Referrals are the highest-quality leads you can get. A customer referred by a friend already trusts your shop before they arrive. They're less price-sensitive, more likely to return, and more likely to refer others. Yet most shops don't have a formal referral program. That's leaving money on the table.

Why Referral Programs Work

People trust recommendations from people they know more than any advertisement. When a friend recommends your shop, that friend has already done the selling for you. Referral customers typically have higher lifetime value because they come in with positive expectations. They're also more forgiving if something goes wrong because they trust the person who referred them.

Structure Your Referral Program

Keep it simple. Offer a discount or gift card to any customer who refers a friend who completes a service. For example: 'Refer a friend, and you both get $20 off your next service.' Or: 'Get a free oil change when your referred friend completes their first service.' The incentive should be meaningful enough to motivate but not so generous that it eats your margin.

  • For every referral that results in a job: $20–$50 off the referrer's next service
  • Or: Free service (oil change, tire rotation) to the referrer
  • Or: Referral points that accumulate toward discounts
  • Track referred customers by asking 'Who referred you?' on intake

Promote Your Program Everywhere

Put referral program details on your website, invoices, thank-you cards, and work order receipts. Train your team to mention it verbally when a customer is leaving. Make it easy—hand them a card with the program details or a link to share with friends.

Track Referrals Accurately

Assign each referral to the customer who made the recommendation. Track which customers are your top referrers—these are your brand ambassadors. Show appreciation by giving them extra incentives or shout-outs in your newsletter.

Gamify It for Extra Motivation

Create tiers: 'Get $50 off when you refer 3 friends. Get a free wheel alignment when you refer 5.' Top referrers could get exclusive perks or loyalty bonuses. The goal is to turn your best customers into active promoters of your shop.
