Vehicle Inspection Checklist: A Complete Pre-Service and Safety Check Guide

A systematic vehicle inspection checklist helps mechanics catch issues before they become problems. Here's a complete guide with a printable template.

A thorough vehicle inspection at every service visit catches problems early — before they strand a customer or become a liability issue. It also generates additional revenue by identifying needed work. A systematic checklist ensures nothing is missed.

Exterior Walk-Around

Start outside the vehicle before it goes on the lift:

  • Tire condition and tread depth (check all four + spare)
  • Tire pressure (compare to door jamb spec)
  • Visible damage to body panels, glass, mirrors
  • Wiper blade condition
  • Exterior lights: headlights, taillights, turn signals, reverse lights
  • License plate lights

Under Hood

Check the engine bay systematically:

  • Engine oil level and condition
  • Coolant level and color
  • Brake fluid level
  • Power steering fluid level (if applicable)
  • Transmission fluid level and condition
  • Windshield washer fluid
  • Battery terminals: clean, tight, no corrosion
  • Drive belts: condition and tension
  • Hoses: cracks, soft spots, swelling
  • Air filter condition

On the Lift

With the vehicle in the air, inspect:

  • Brake pads and rotor condition (all four corners)
  • Brake lines and hoses for leaks or damage
  • Shocks and struts: leaking, worn mounts
  • Tie rod ends and ball joints: play, wear
  • CV axles and boots
  • Exhaust system: leaks, damage, hanging hangers
  • Undercarriage fluid leaks (oil, coolant, gear oil, ATF)
  • Fuel lines and connections

Interior and Electronics

Before returning the vehicle:

  • Warning lights on dashboard
  • Horn operation
  • All interior lights
  • Climate control operation
  • Seat belts: function and condition
  • Mirrors: adjustment and condition

Documenting Results

Record each item as Pass, Needs Attention, or Fail. Items marked Needs Attention or Fail should be photographed and presented to the customer with an explanation and estimate. Mechanics supports custom inspection templates with per-item results linked directly to the work order.
