Idle Air Control Valve: Symptoms, Testing, and Replacement Cost

A failing idle air control valve causes rough idle, stalling, and hard starts. Here's how to diagnose it and what it costs to fix.

What the Idle Air Control Valve Does

The idle air control (IAC) valve regulates how much air bypasses the throttle when the engine is at idle. This allows the engine to idle smoothly without stalling. If the IAC valve fails, the engine can't maintain a steady idle and the check engine light may appear.

Common Symptoms

A failing IAC valve causes a rough, fluctuating idle (engine RPM bounces between 200 and 800). You might hear engine knocking or feel vibration through the steering wheel. The engine may stall at red lights or when you come to a stop. Some vehicles will throw a check engine light (code P0505 or similar).

  • Rough, fluctuating idle
  • Engine stalling when stopped
  • Hard starts (especially when cold)
  • Check engine light (code P0505)
  • Vibration or shaking at idle

How to Test

First, clear any diagnostic codes and see if P0505 returns. If it does, the IAC valve is likely the problem. Some shops will clean the IAC valve first (carbon buildup can mimic failure). If cleaning doesn't work, the valve must be replaced. A scan tool can also monitor the IAC position and duty cycle to confirm it's not responding properly.

Replacement Cost

An IAC valve replacement typically costs $150–$400 in parts and labor, depending on the vehicle. Some vehicles have the IAC integrated into the throttle body, which makes replacement more expensive. Always confirm the diagnosis before committing to the repair.

Prevention

IAC valve failure is often related to carbon buildup inside the engine. Regular oil changes, quality fuel, and periodic fuel system cleaning can extend the life of the IAC valve.
